MARKING ON STAINLESS STEEL

Marking and engraving on stainless steel

Commonly referred to as stainless steel, stainless steel is highly resistant to oxidation, corrosion and deformation. Chromium and nickel are often added to the alloy of iron and carbon, providing resistance to oxidation and enhanced mechanical properties. Thanks to these properties, stainless steel has become an essential component in many sectors.

As with traditional steels, Technomark Marking can mark stainless steel using laser or dot peen technology, without altering part properties. Entrust the engraving of your stainless steel parts to Technomark equipment!

STAINLESS STEEL ENGRAVING TECHNOLOGIES

Laser engraving on stainless steel

Stainless steel is a very interesting material for laser engraving. Its various technical characteristics enable different marking results to be produced, depending on the parameters of the laser marking machine. In fact, marking power, speed and number of repetitions offer a wide range of rendering possibilities on stainless steel.

Annealed marking without material removal

One of the advantages of fiber laser technology is that, if the operator wishes, marking can be carried out without removing any material. This means no loss of stainless steel. The laser source focuses its beam to generate enough heat to “anneal” the stainless steel. The surface of the part is not altered, the surface remains smooth, but the marking will stand out in sharp contrast to the rest of the part.

Deep engraving on stainless steel

It is also possible to engrave to a depth of several millimeters for a clean, aesthetic result. The laser beam will require several passes to remove several layers on the surface of the part to be engraved.

DOT PEEN MARKING

Traceability of stainless steel thanks to dot peen

Dot peen technology is very popular in many sectors. Its main advantage is its ability to deform the material with a tungsten stylus, making the marking permanent. This makes the marking resistant to damage and falsification.

The deformation of the material by numerous small impacts generates no material chips or fractures on the part, making it one of the most reliable marking solutions for stainless steel.

In fact, stainless steel is often used in certain sectors with traceability requirements. In the medical sector, for example, the vast majority of metal tools and utensils are made of stainless steel. These same tools need to be traced in order to follow their course of use and treatment. Indeed, in this sector, sterilization procedures are particularly strict.
